How to use this Calendar
This Diocesan Calendar is
authorised by the Bishop of Truro for use within the Diocese. It is based upon
the Calendar authorised by the General Synod as part of Common Worship.
The calendar lists all the
Sundays, Principal Feasts, Festivals and Lesser Festivals from Common
Worship as they fall during the period Advent 2002 - Christmas 2003. It
also includes diocesan additions to this general calendar, consisting of
saints honoured in three or more places throughout the diocese, or those after
whom Cathedral stalls are named. For the most part, saints are included on the
days when they are celebrated in their particular area, but occasionally a
saint's day has been moved by one or two days so as not to clash with a
festival already in CW. However, in two cases where there is a clash of dates
involving a diocesan observance kept as a Festival - Michael, Protector of
Cornwall (May 8th) and the Dedication of the Cathedral (November 3rd -
transferred this year to November 4th) the lesser festival in CW has been
transferred in favour of the diocesan observance.
The categories of observance
accord with those in CW:
PRINCIPAL FEASTS AND PRINCIPAL HOLY DAYS
Festivals
Sundays and Lesser Festivals
(In addition to these three categories, CW has a large number of Commemorations
which do not appear in this Calendar, but which may be observed if required.
These appear in italics in Common Worship and hagiographies for these
holy men and women appear in Exciting Holiness.)
Canon Law (B14) dictates that on PRINCIPAL FEASTS and PRINCIPAL HOLY
DAYS (except for Good Friday) the Holy Communion is celebrated in every
parish church, and the liturgical provision for Morning and Evening Prayer is
of the Feast. In addition, for PRINCIPAL FEASTS (except Christmas Day
and Easter Day) the celebration of the feast begins with Evening Prayer on the
day before the feast.
Festivals are not normally displaced.
For each day there is full liturgical provision in CLC for the Holy Communion
and for Morning and Evening Prayer. It is to be hoped that all parishes will
observe in full the diocesan additions to the list of festivals:
Piran of Cornwall, Abbot (March 5th)
Michael, Protector of Cornwall (May 8th)
Petroc of Cornwall, Abbot (June 4th)
German, Bishop (October 1st)
Dedication of Truro Cathedral (November
3rd)
Lesser Festivals are observed
at the level appropriate to a particular church. At the Holy Communion the
collect and readings provided in CW may supersede the collect of the week and
the daily eucharistic lectionary. The daily psalms and readings at Morning and
Evening Prayer are not normally superseded by those for lesser
festivals.
Commemorations (not shown in the
Diocesan Calendar) are made by a mention in prayers of intercession and
thanksgiving, and do not replace the usual weekday provision at any
service.
For a complete list of the rules to order the service, reference should be
made to Common Worship main volume pp 526 - 533.
